About Brian Thiessen – Iron Roamer
It was the winter of 2011 and I was sick that I first thought about motorcycle adventure travel. While being sick isn’t unusual, this time I was in the small town of Strumica in Macedonia where I was working as a Police Adviser for the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (for more work history visit my LinkedIn page) As I lay on my bed huddled up against my portable heater it suddenly hit me, I should be motorcycling! It was a moment of seemingly total clarity.
I had some riding experience but not much. My first “motorcycle” was a Honda 50 mini bike that I had in elementary school for a couple of years.
My next bike was working in the Traffic Section with the Matsqui Police Service (now the Abbotsford Police Department) for 2 years. That was it.
The idea of adventure motorcycling grew and I became obsessed with it. I read and watched everything I could get my hands on. I love reading other people’s motorcycle adventure blogs. At first I thought I would travel around the United States. But as I read more, and watched Long Way Down and Long Way Around, I thought why not do an adventure motorcycle ride around the world! It was time to put my motorcycle epiphany into action.
In May 2012 I set off to first ride around the United States, including the epic Tail of the Dragon in North Carolina.
But after 6 months I decided I needed more money. The US is expensive! So I went back to work for 2 years.
Now it is all in! Around the world on a motorcycle or bust!
It would be awesome to have you join me by in my new motorcycle adventure of roaming the world. Check out my Daily Journals and Blogs. I hope you will learn and laugh at my challenges and successes; then create your own adventure. Check out my motorcycle adventure philosophy page.
